Roy Haynes played with Lester Young, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, Sonny Rollins and dozens more. He turned down an offer from Duke Ellington out of loyalty to another group. As a teenager, his idol was Count Basie’s drummer Jo Jones and finally met him by talking his way backstage at a Boston club by claiming to be Jones’s son. Haynes was still recording in his 80s and was named a National Endowment for the Humanities Jazz Master in 1995. He toured with Pat Metheny who said that “Haynes is the human manifestation of whatever is the word ‘hip’ before it just became a word.”
